Workshop: Sound, Rhythm, and Prosody

November 9th, 2009

When you describe something, what sense do you rely on? Sight is one common answer — you might describe how something looks. Or you may invoke smell when describing a walk in the woods (fresh? damp? sharp?) or a visit to someone’s home (baking bread?).

Sound is often overlooked as a dimension in writing. Yet sound can be a powerful tool for writers. But how do you describe the sound in a scene effectively? And how can you harness the sounds and rhythms of the language itself?

“Sound, Rhythm, and Prosody” is a two-part workshop that looks at the way sound operates in all genres of writing and introduces strategies for capturing sound on the page.

Dr. Scott Pound is an associate professor of English at Lakehead University, where he teaches courses in poetry, literature, and writing.

Come to the Waverley Library Auditorium (285 Red River Road, Thunder Bay) on Monday, November 9 and Monday, November 23 at 7 p.m.

You are welcome to come to either workshop or both — attendance at the first is not required for you to learn at the second!
